District Report Card
Superintendent's Message

As August begins, the excitement of a new school year begins to grow. We are so excited about the opportunities coming to Conotton Valley this year. Year two of our “Leader in Me” initiative will introduce some big changes. For example, student-led parent conferences will be a new addition to our district approach. You can read more about student-led conferences in this issue of “From the Heart of the Valley.”

Throughout the 2017-18 school year, you will see some new faces as well as some new pilot programs we are introducing this year. Last year was our first year with the “No Homework Policy” for K-8. I still believe very much in this approach as kids need time to be kids. However, we will be asking our elementary/junior high parents to partner with our elementary/junior high teachers by encouraging our kiddos to read or review math facts on a nightly basis. Fifteen minutes a night will make a huge impact on their growth. Look for more information from your child’s teacher.

This year, the Conotton Valley Union Local School District will be utilizing MAP testing for our K-12 students in reading, math and science. Our students will take assessments three times throughout the year. We will utilize the results to identify specific student needs to enable our staff to provide differentiated instruction so students can achieve a higher level of growth. Additionally, we will be mailing these results to parents to better inform them of their child’s current performance level with regards to that particular subject area.

Finally, we will be introducing standards-based report cards in our elementary grades. This year will be a transition year for the students, staff and parents. The standards-based type of report card will require a complete paradigm shift. We will be focusing on the specific state standards and a student’s level of proficiency with regards to that standard. It means we will need to shift from the A-F or O-U grades that we have used over the years. During the 2017-2018 school year, we will continue to use letter grades while also referencing the new standards-based report card.

On behalf of the CV Board of Education, administrators and staff, I would like to say, “thank you for allowing us the opportunity to work with your children.” We know that they are our future and your most precious commodity! Go Rockets!
